The Macromolecular Research Center was established by the Regents of the University of Michigan in 1968 to coordinate research in macromolecular science, to support postdoctoral research, to train graduate students in polymer science, and to interact with the vast polymer industry nationwide. The degree granting component of the Center, The Macromolecular Science and Engineering Program, was established by the Rackham School of Graduate Studies in 1971. Charles G. Overberger served as the founder and Director of the Macromolecular Research Center from 1968-1987.

2009 – Relationship established with Nagoya University as first of many international collaborations
2014 – Outreach program begins
2015 – Lab rotations and innovation option begin, largest M.S. class enrolls, and student outreach to Detroit Public Schools
2016 – Industrial support grows for symposium and student fellowships
2018 – Macro celebrates 50 years of excellence
