Master’s Degree Options

The Macro Master’s program offers a range of options to best fit a student’s academic and research background in addition to their future goals.

Master of Science (MS): Traditional master’s degree for students coming from non-engineering bachelor’s programs.

Master of Science in Engineering (MSE): Traditional master’s degree for students who earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
*BS in engineering is required to apply.

Master of Science or Master of Science and Engineering (Research)

Students can participate in research with a chosen faculty advisor in conjunction with their required coursework (8 courses).  These research efforts culminate in a written report, publication, or approved Master’s thesis.  Students are expected to complete the program in 1.5 to 2 years (3 or 4 academic terms).

Master of Science or Master of Science and Engineering (Coursework)

Students will focus on coursework in their degree (10 courses) and elect to not participate in research. Students may choose from previously approved course plans or create an individualized one tailored to their interests and goals. Students are expected to complete the program in 1.5 to 2 years (3 or 4 academic terms).

Master of Science in Engineering (For current U-M students only)

Current undergraduates at Michigan are eligible to participate in the Sequential Undergraduate/Graduate Studies (SUGS) Program to earn your Master’s from Macro with just one additional year of study.  Students are able to double-count select courses from their undergraduate degree towards the Master’s requirements.  Students can participate in research or elect to focus on coursework. Master of Management Dual Degree

Macro has partnered with the Master of Management Program in the Ross School of Business to allow students the ability to concurrently earn a Master of Management alongside their Macro degree. The Master of Management program caters to students without an undergraduate business background and offers them the chance to develop strong business skills and experience to compliment their technical engineering education.

Students would complete the Master of Management program during their first year and then focus on Macro coursework and (if applicable) research during their second year.  Certain courses can count towards both degrees, so the program can be completed in just two full years (4 academic terms).

Course Plan Options

Students can elect course plans in Biomaterials, Biomedical, Chemical, and Materials Science Engineering in addition to Innovation, Chemistry, Organic Electronics and Photonics, and Physics.

When considering elective courses beyond the Macro core requirements students are not limited to just the College of Engineering.  Students can elect courses in the Center for Entrepreneurship, Ross School of Business, and other applicable areas in science and medicine.

MS and MSE Degree Requirements

Students are required to complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework, which may include 4-6 hours of research credits.  Other course requirements include:

  • A minimum of 9 credit hours of coursework in Macromolecular Science & Engineering
  • A minimum of 9 credit hours of coursework in the student’s chosen course option
  • Additional coursework to reach the 30 credit hour minimum
  • If conducting research a written report or approved Master’s thesis is required.

*Students must also adhere to other degree requirements as outlined by the Rackham Graduate School and in the Macro Student Handbook.

Funding

Unfortunately, at this time the Macro program cannot offer funding packages to Master’s students. In some cases Master’s students are able to secure partial funding during their second year of study as research assistants, teaching assistants, or course graders, however such positions cannot be guaranteed.
